Our History
From 1948 to Today
The origins of Knightsbridge Doctors trace back to the era of the 1911 National Insurance Act, when Dr McNaught began providing private medical services in Central London. The practice operated as a panel practice under that legislation, offering care to working men and their families.
When the National Health Service was established in 1948, the practice took a deliberate decision not to join. The founding physicians believed that personalised medicine, with longer consultations and continuity of care, required remaining independent. That decision has defined the practice ever since.
Through the decades, the practice was shaped by dedicated physicians. Dr Ray Rowntree, Dr John Allison and Dr Tom King each brought their own expertise and commitment to the highest standards. Dr Swann established the radiology unit, giving the practice its own in-house X-ray capability, a significant advantage that continues to serve patients today.
In 1968, the practice moved from Cumberland Mansions near Marble Arch to its current home at No. 15 Basil Mansions, Basil Street, Knightsbridge. The location in the heart of SW3, just steps from Harrods and Knightsbridge Underground station, has been the practice address for over fifty years.
Today, the practice is led by Dr Eoin Waters and supported by a team of experienced GPs, each bringing specialist interests in areas ranging from sports medicine and menopause care to dermatology and weight management. The commitment to 30-minute consultations, 24-hour on-call cover by practice doctors, and knowing every patient personally remains unchanged.
