Travel Vaccinations: The Complete Guide for London Travellers

By Knightsbridge Doctors

Planning a trip abroad involves many logistics, and travel vaccinations should be near the top of the list. Some vaccines need to be given weeks or even months before departure, so plan early. At Knightsbridge Doctors, we are a designated Yellow Fever centre and provide the full range of travel vaccinations.

The vaccinations you need depend on your destination, the duration and type of travel, your accommodation, planned activities, and your personal medical history. A travel health consultation at our practice will identify exactly which vaccinations and preventive measures are appropriate for your trip.

Hepatitis A is recommended for most travel to countries with limited sanitation, including much of Asia, Africa, Central and South America, and parts of Eastern Europe. The vaccine provides long-lasting protection after two doses. If time is short, a single dose provides protection for approximately one year.

Hepatitis B vaccination is particularly important for longer stays, healthcare workers, or travellers who may have contact with blood or body fluids. We offer a combined Hepatitis A and B vaccine that covers both in a three-dose course.

Typhoid vaccination is recommended for travel to South Asia (particularly India, Pakistan, Bangladesh), parts of Africa, and Central and South America. The injectable vaccine provides protection for approximately three years. We also offer a combined Hepatitis A and Typhoid vaccine for convenience.

Yellow Fever vaccination is required for entry to certain countries in Africa and South America, and proof of vaccination may be needed for onward travel from endemic areas. As a designated Yellow Fever centre, we can administer the vaccine and issue the International Certificate of Vaccination that serves as your proof. The certificate becomes valid 10 days after vaccination.

Rabies pre-exposure vaccination is recommended for travellers to areas where rabies is common who may have contact with animals, particularly in rural areas of Asia, Africa, and South America. The course consists of three doses given over 21 to 28 days, so advance planning is important.

Japanese Encephalitis vaccination is recommended for travellers spending extended time in rural areas of Southeast Asia, particularly during the monsoon season. The course requires two doses given 28 days apart.

Meningitis ACWY vaccination is required for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims to Saudi Arabia and recommended for travel to the African meningitis belt (sub-Saharan Africa from Senegal to Ethiopia) during the dry season.

Malaria prevention is not a vaccine but remains important for many tropical destinations. We prescribe antimalarial medication appropriate to your destination and discuss mosquito bite prevention strategies.

Our travel vaccination prices range from £60 per dose (Typhoid) to £130 per dose (Hepatitis A and Typhoid combined). The full price list is available on our fees page. We recommend booking your travel health consultation at least 6 to 8 weeks before departure to allow time for multi-dose courses.
